Volvo enabled diversity under its hood. Depending on markets, customers will be able to choose between petrol, diesel and hybrid variants. Base engine is a T6, 2.0-liter four-cylinder machine capable to deliver up to 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic transmission are standard, while front-wheel drive is optional.

Plug-in hybrid variant of the 2016 Volvo XC90 combines this engine with a 60-kW, 80-hp electric motor to deliver total output of 395 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque.

There is also a diesel unit, twin-turbo diesel, to be precise, capable to produce up to 222 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque.

Volvo could also include the T5 power unit, which is the same displacement as T6, but it is only turbocharged, and not supercharged, and as such delivers 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. If so, the T5 would be the base, while T6 would come as second in the line-up.
