2016 Ford Explorer

2016 Ford Explorer will be majorly redesigned, and this time, American producer paid much more attention to its performance, rather than the appearance. Exterior of the new SUV will not be left out from this major refreshment, since Ford prepared a lot of surprises for that area too. New Explorer resembles the most to current Edge with some styling cues taken from its smaller cousin. This great change was kept under the secret, and Explorer was recently coughed on the streets with heavy camouflage, which gave some indications what to expect.

2016 Ford Explorer changes

When it comes to look of the 2016 Ford Explorer it will have new wide-slatted grille while the front edges will give it more boxy look than before. Changes are visible on the headlights too, which are narrower, and more conventional. Bumper is lower, while designers decided to add few extra air vents in order to deliver more aggressive appearance. Exterior changes will also include LED fog lights and sharper LED taillamps.

Expected changes will include weight reduction of the 2016 Ford Explorer, which will be achieved with use of aluminum in its body panels. Just recently Ford managed to shed 700 pounds from a F-150 pickup, which is stunning, but 2016 Explorer will gain much even without such  a big number of pounds.

Under the hood of 2016 Ford Explorer will be couple of changes. Base engine, 3.5-liter V6 will be kept, since its power and fuel economy rates are very good. It delivers up to 290 horsepower and 255 lb.-ft. of torque, and returns 20 mpg in combined ride.

When it comes to second available engine, Ford will make a change. The current one, 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine will be dropped, and there is couple of versions which could be placed on its position. First option is a 2.7-liter EcoBoost that produces 325 hp and 375 lb.-ft. of torque. Second option is a 2.3-liter four-cylinder power unit, with 285 hp and 305 lb.-ft. of torque.

Transmission choice will probably remain the same, so we can expect 6-speed automatic as standard. Drive train systems are also unchanged, so both front- and all-wheel drive are still available.

2016 Ford Explorer competition

Redesigned Explorer will be faced with some tough rivals, since seven-seat SUV used to offer less space than its competitors, such as Chevrolet Traverse or Dodge Durango. Fuel economy rates also didn’t work in favor of the Explorer, but the new model year seems to be bringing improvements in that department, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see some increase in interior space.
