2016 BMW X1 will be majorly redesigned, since it will feature the beginning of the second generation for this luxury compact crossover. Even though it looked unlikely, since the previous, 2015 model, came with numerous upgrades, German car producer will launch its new X1 with significant changes.  The prototype of the model was spotted on the streets during testing, and those spy shots confirmed some earlier speculations about X1’s redesign which includes platform change, and extensive body work.

First of all, 2016 BMW X1 will come with different underpinning, which will cause dimension changes. New X1 will be shorter than the previous model, which is especially visible on the front end. Beside its length, body shape is also influenced by some major design alterations. Popular SUV is now sleeker and more aggressive, with slightly remodeled front fascia. Brand’s recognizable kidney grill will mainly stay unchanged, while the shape of headlights that flow into it is slightly altered.

Shrunken dimensions will not affect its interior space, mainly due to its new platform, and front-wheel drive configuration. There are also some rumors that BMW could offer longer wheelbase option, which would open the possibility for customers to choose arrangement with 7-seats and more cargo space than the regular version has to offer. Tech features and materials will be on a highest level, as we used to from the Germans.

New UKL platform which underpins the second generation X1 comes with front-wheel drive as basic set-up, while it offers the possibility for the all-wheel drive. This transition may cause 2016 BMW X1 to lose some of its responsiveness, and sporty drive in favor of its efficiency and functionality. Its overall body weight will be lower than before, which will additionally improve fuel economy.

The base engine could be a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that delivers around 231 horsepower. Second engine that will probably be included into the offer is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, which already has some fans.

Diesel power units will be available for European market, while it is unclear whether BMW will offer some of it for the US market. Only transmission choice will probably be an eight-speed automatic.

Even though their starting prices were higher the level of equipment and space was on side of its competitors, such as Audi Q5 and Infiniti QX50. If you are looking for similar, but cheaper compact SUV, check Ford Kuga and VW Tiguan.

2016 BMW X1 will be released during the summer 2015, and it should feature price increase, due to intensity of changes. Its base price should be around $32,000 at least, which is around $1,000 pricier than previous model.
